Washington DC

While Washington D.C. itself is entirely urban and does not allow hunting within its borders, the broader metropolitan region—which includes parts of Maryland and Virginia—offers a variety of outdoor pursuits. If you’re willing to drive an hour or so outside the city, you can find designated public lands and wildlife management areas where hunting is permitted under state regulations. For instance, portions of northern Virginia have controlled deer hunting programs (especially archery) to manage populations in suburban counties. In Maryland, certain county parks and state wildlife management areas allow seasonal hunts for deer, turkey, and small game, as long as you have the proper permits and follow local regulations.

When it comes to fishing, the Potomac River is the centerpiece for anglers in and around D.C. Within the city limits, you can fish at spots like the Georgetown Waterfront, Fletcher’s Cove, and along the tidal basin of the Potomac, targeting species such as catfish, largemouth bass, and migratory shad (in season). Be sure to check D.C. fishing regulations and licensing requirements, which differ from those in Maryland and Virginia—even though you may be standing on the same riverbank, the jurisdiction can change. Beyond the Potomac, the nearby Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries open up a world-class fishery for rockfish (striped bass), bluefish, and more. If you’re looking for other outdoor activities, Rock Creek Park in D.C. offers miles of hiking and biking trails, while Great Falls Park just outside the city provides scenic overlooks and opportunities for kayaking or rock climbing. For a true backcountry feel, Shenandoah National Park (about 1.5–2 hours away) offers extensive hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
