Virginia

Virginia’s diverse ecosystems, from the Atlantic coastal plain to the Blue Ridge Mountains, support a range of game species. Whitetail deer and wild turkey dominate the hunting scene, while black bears also thrive in certain mountainous areas. Sika deer are found on Assateague Island in the eastern part of the state, offering a unique, exotic pursuit for hunters. With numerous wildlife management areas, George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, and private land access programs, Virginia accommodates a wide variety of hunting styles.

Fishing in Virginia includes freshwater opportunities for bass, catfish, crappie, and trout across numerous lakes and rivers. The James River, for instance, is known for its trophy blue catfish, and the Smith River offers exceptional trout fishing. Along the coast, the Chesapeake Bay is home to striped bass (rockfish), flounder, and bluefish, with offshore charters pursuing tuna, marlin, and other pelagic species. Beyond sports, Virginia’s storied history, sprawling state parks, and Blue Ridge Parkway beckon hikers, campers, and history buffs alike, making it a well-rounded destination for outdoor recreation.
