South Dakota is famous for its pheasant hunting, attracting upland bird enthusiasts each fall to the state’s prime grasslands and agricultural fields. The ring-necked pheasant is the official state bird, and well-managed habitats contribute to strong populations. Big game hunters also pursue whitetail and mule deer, as well as pronghorn in certain western regions. The Black Hills offer opportunities for elk, turkey, and mountain lion, providing a unique contrast to the open prairies found elsewhere in the state.
Fishing in South Dakota centers on the Missouri River reservoirs—Lake Oahe, Lake Sharpe, Lake Francis Case, and Lewis and Clark Lake—all known for walleye, smallmouth bass, and catfish. Eastern glacial lakes also provide excellent perch and pike fishing, particularly through the ice in winter. Outside of traditional sporting activities, South Dakota’s landscapes include the Badlands, Custer State Park, and Mount Rushmore, all popular for sightseeing, hiking, and camping. The state’s blend of prairies and pine-covered hills ensures a variety of settings for every type of outdoor enthusiast.
