Kentucky’s hunting heritage is exemplified by its robust populations of whitetail deer and wild turkey. The state has garnered attention in recent years for producing large bucks, particularly in regions with a combination of agricultural fields and wooded areas. Elk hunting is also available in eastern Kentucky, where a successful reintroduction program has flourished, drawing lottery-drawn hunters to the scenic Appalachian Mountains. Small game, such as squirrels and rabbits, remain staples for many local hunters, and waterfowl opportunities can be found along the Ohio River and various wetlands.
On the fishing side, Kentucky is home to iconic waters like Lake Cumberland and Kentucky Lake, well-regarded for bass, crappie, and catfish. The state’s many rivers also support a variety of fish, from smallmouth bass in the rocky streams of eastern Kentucky to trophy catfish in the Ohio River. Trout stockings in select streams, like those in the Cumberland River tailwaters, give fly anglers opportunities to chase rainbow and brown trout. Beyond these pursuits, Kentucky’s diverse terrain—ranging from the rolling Bluegrass region to rugged eastern mountains—offers hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife watching in numerous state parks and natural areas.
