Idaho stands as a gem for big game hunters seeking elk, mule deer, and mountain lion in its expansive wilderness areas. The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness are just two of the massive public land offerings where hunters can hike deep into rugged backcountry. Moose and bighorn sheep tags are harder to come by, but they represent some of Idaho’s most impressive trophies. The state’s varied terrain—ranging from high desert in the south to thick forests in the north—allows for an equally varied hunting experience.
Idaho’s waterways are prime fishing destinations for trout, steelhead, and salmon. The Salmon River, dubbed the “River of No Return,” offers epic steelhead runs, while the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River is a holy grail for fly anglers targeting trophy trout. High mountain lakes tucked into the Sawtooth and Bitterroot Ranges also stock healthy populations of cutthroat trout. Beyond hunting and fishing, Idaho is a paradise for hikers, rafters, and skiers. The state’s national forests provide endless trails, while destinations like Sun Valley are world-class winter sports spots.
