West Virginia

West Virginia’s mountainous terrain, part of the Appalachian range, is a perfect habitat for whitetail deer, black bear, and wild turkey. The state has gained recognition for trophy bucks, particularly in its southwestern counties. Black bear populations are on the rise, offering both archery and rifle seasons, while turkey hunts in the state’s hardwood forests are a spring highlight. With more than a million acres of national forest and extensive wildlife management areas, West Virginia accommodates a broad spectrum of hunting traditions.

Fishing in the Mountain State centers on its rivers and streams, which hold smallmouth bass, musky, and trout. The New River and Gauley River are especially famous for their smallmouth bass and challenging whitewater, attracting both anglers and whitewater rafters. Stocked trout streams are scattered throughout the state, providing accessible fishing year-round. For hikers, the state’s dense forests and steep ridges offer endless trails, including parts of the Appalachian Trail and the Monongahela National Forest. West Virginia’s scenic beauty and rugged terrain make it a hub for adventure sports like rock climbing, zip-lining, and more.
